Roommates, if current behavior is an example, the issue of double-voting in the upcoming presidential election could be a very serious problem. According to recent reports, 1,000 voters were discovered to have double voted in the Georgia primary—and decision that could potentially see them facing felony charges.
@AJC News reports, 1,000 Georgia voters returned absentee ballots and then also showed up to vote for the Georgia primary on June 9th, according to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said. “A double voter knows exactly what they’re doing, diluting the votes of each and every voter that follows the law,” Raffensperger said during a press conference at the Georgia State Capitol. “Those that make the choice to game the system are breaking the law. And as secretary of state, I will not tolerate it.”
Overall, around 150,000 people who requested absentee ballots also showed up at polling places on the day of the Georgia primary—because they never received their absentee ballots in the mail. Of those, 1,000 voters had returned their absentee ballots to county election offices, and poll workers also allowed them to vote in-person. Fortunately, double-voting didn’t change the outcome of any races in the primary. You’ll recall that for the last few months, Trump has encouraged his supporters to vote twice despite it being illegal.
Double-voting is a felony in Georgia, punishable by one to 10 years in prison and a fine up to $100,000. During the June 9th primary, about 1.15 million people cast absentee ballots. To date, around 900,000 people have requested absentee ballots for the November 3rd presidential election general election.
The Georgia attorney general’s office and local prosecutors will decide whether to bring charges following investigations on a case-by-case basis, Raffensperger said. Although county election officials are able to stop double-voting most of the time, but they weren’t able to catch everyone.
