Jay Z Speaks On Police Brutality In New Song Called “Spiritual”

Last night, Jay Z gave his fans some musical healing in the wake of the racial tensions that seem to be tearing this country apart. He released a new song called “Spiritual” via Tidal along with a letter detailing why he chose to write the song.

“I made this song awhile ago, I never got to finish it, ” he wrote. Punch (TDE) told me I should drop it when Mike Brown died, sadly I told him, ‘this issue will always be relevant.’ I’m hurt that I knew his death wouldn’t be the last…..”

His emotional song opens up with his chorus,

“I am not poison / Just a boy from the hood that got my hands in the air / In despair don’t shoot / I just wanna do good.”

He goes on to rap,  “This is the real me unfold / Gangster is love, I’m thuggin’, I’m huggin’ / This is tougher than any gun that I raised / Any crack that I blazed, that was nothin’ / Peeling back the layers, uncovering / Scars that never healed, I never kept it this real.”

Music seems to be an universal healer in times of need and with the aftermath of the the police shootings of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling hopefully it will bring some sort of light to the end of this dark and lonely tunnel. Don’t worry if you’re not a Tidal subscriber, Jay Z has put his song up for free for all to hear! Take a listen and lets chat below!
