Last week, #DwayneWade’s cousin, Nykea Aldridge, was caught in a crossfire in Chicago while walking her child down the street in a stroller. Wade tweeted about the senseless gun violence and urged citizens to get involved with ending the senseless killings. However, presidential candidate Donald Trump took it upon himself to make a political statement by classlessly tweeting, “[Dwayne] Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago. Just what I have been saying. African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!”
When asked about how he felt about Trump’s tweet, Wade told ABC News that he felt “conflicted.” “You know, it’s like, on one hand – your cousin’s death is used as a ploy for political gain. On the other hand, it’s a national story,” he continued.
“I want us to be able to do more together and the only way we can do more together is for people to know what’s going on. So, I was grateful that it started a conversation, but on the other hand, it [was just a] bad taste in my mouth because of, you know, what my family is dealing with and what our city of Chicago is dealing with and it looks like it’s being used as political gain.”
