Drake On His Grammy Win: “I Don’t Even Want Them Because It Feels Weird!”

Although he wasn’t in attendance, Drake took home two Grammy Awards last week. The two categories he won were “Best Rap Songfor Hotline Bling,” and “Best Rap/Sung Performance” — but he isn’t satisfied.

It’s not like he’s being ungrateful or anything, a lot of us can’t even win a regular-degular-shmegular contest, let alone a Grammy award; but Drake says there’s something a little off about his victory.

Even though Hotline Bling is not a rap songthe only category they can manage to fit me in is a rap category,he said while on the OVO Sound radio show just one day after his win. Maybe because Ive rapped in the past or because Im black, I cant figure out why. Just like I cant figure out why One Dance wasnt nominated.

The tea starts to warm up right…about…now!

So as Drizzy continued to attempt to figure out where the real disconnect lies between the Grammys and the black community, he said he believes that the Grammys simply don’t know where to place game-changing Black artists, so they’re largely reduced to urban categories.

I love the rap world and I love the rap community, but youre right. I write pop songs for a reason, he said. I wanna be like Michael Jackson. I wanna be like artists that Ive looked up to. Those are pop songs, but I never get any credit for thatI won two awards last night, but I dont even want them because it feels weird for some reason. It just doesnt feel right to me[they want to] pacify me by handing me something, putting me in that category, because its the only place you can figure out where to put me.

Weve been conditioned to think that this is the true award for our accomplishments, he said. All Im saying is, to kids that will be coming up in the future that might not get championed: thats okay, too. Youre dealing with a bunch of people that are just people, at the end of the day.
