Detroit rapper 42 Dugg has been sentenced to one year after failing to report to prison, ending a case that has taken several years to adjudicate.

On Wednesday, a judge sentenced Dugg, whose real name is Dion Hayes, to one year behind bars, according to the Detroit News. The rapper pleaded guilty to failure to surrender back in February.

The 28-year-old will also have to serve three years of supervised release, alongside a $20,000 fine, and refrain from using illegal drugs.

Additionally, 42 Dugg agreed to attend a 30-day inpatient drug treatment program upon his release next year. A 30-day outpatient program will follow this.

The outlet reports that the one-year term comes despite prosecutors recommending a six-month sentence. Judge William Ray II could have overruled the prosecutor’s recommendation and sentenced Dugg to up to five years in prison. However, he ultimately opted for one year behind bars for the We Paid rapper.

Sentencing Brings An End To Years-Long Case After Authorities Received Tip Back in 2019

Back in Nov. 2019, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) got an anonymous tip stating that Dugg had been at an Atlanta gun range firing weapons.

As a convicted felon (for previous carjacking and firearms possession charges), Dugg is not allowed to own or fire any weapon.

He was ultimately arrested and charged with felony firearms possession in March 2020, as previously reported by The Shade Room.

A little over a year later, the rapper and his lawyers entered plea negotiations for the firearm charge, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.

Dugg was able to circumvent jail and make off with just probation in that plea deal. But, a judge later revoked it and hit him with a six-month sentence and two years of supervised release.

“Sovereign Citizen” Claim Denied By Court, Dugg Failed To Report To West Virginia Prison

In April 2022, he failed to surrender and report to a West Virginia prison, forcing federal authorities to find him. Law enforcement eventually located him in May after landing at a Detroit airport.

Dugg first entered a not-guilty plea, claiming he was a “sovereign citizen” and didn’t have to obey federal laws, which did not work.

He tweeted back in March from behind bars, writing:

“A lot of these n***** got get out jail free cards, I guess ’cause I’m turnt I gotta go through the worst!!!!!!” he wrote. “Death Before Dishonor, #FREEDEMBOYZ.”
