Last year, we covered a story that tugged at all of our heartstrings. Dana Griffin-Graves and her husband Arkell had been married for close to two decades and tried conceiving for most of those years only to suffer four miscarriages and a stillbirth. The couple decided to stop trying and eventually adopted a son. Last spring, Mrs. Griffin-Graves decided to focus on her health and wellness, but noticed that she wasn’t losing weight unlike her workout buddies. It wasn’t until a doctor’s visit that the then 41 year old discovered she was almost 5 months pregnant!
The mother-to-be placed a pack of buns in the oven along with a sonogram picture and silently recorded her husband’s reaction to the news. “You’re pregnant!?” he asked. Dana replied yes and that’s when she revealed that not only was she 5 months along, but they’d be welcoming a son the following February. Tears streamed down Arkell’s face as he stood there in shock and disbelief. Two weeks later, unfortunately, Dana began to experience a series of complications which would cause her to give birth to their son 16 weeks early. Kaleb Arkell Graves was born October 20th at a very small 13 oz. Now, just 3 weeks shy of his first birthday he weighs 13 pound! Even though little Kaleb is in the NICU, he is growing just fine!
Speaking to Mrs. Griffin-Graves, she shared some advice for any of our readers who may be facing challenges with fertility. “Never give up,” she told the Shade Room. “When you least expect it, it may happen, but always keep your mind and heart open to all possibilities.”
