Degree, Check …Job, Not Yet! Tips On Getting A Job After College

#Roommates, every year grad season approaches! The overwhelming joy felt knowing you’ve achieved a milestone like this is unexplainable for many. The late nights spent at the tech center, the ongoing emails spent fighting with your professor for a better grade and the lifetime friends created through what some would describe as the best four years of your life.

However, once you walk across that stage, reality hits you. Crap, I need a job! Some are lucky to secure employment right before graduation, others are not. Well, if you happen to be a graduate and reading this, first and foremost – congratulations! I know you’re probably feeling anxious or nervous that you’re having trouble finding a job, but I’m here to tell you don’t worry! Research says it takes an average of 3-6 months before a recent graduate is able to secure employment in their field. Also, depending on your major, some careers may be in higher demand than others. Here are some tips to help you secure the job.. and bag.

1. Set up informational interviews. I cannot stress how important it is to introduce yourself to people in your field. Sometimes it’s all about who you know, and who knows you. Most major companies will often seek advice from their colleagues first when looking to hire for new positions. Another strategy could be to reach out to people who may have your desired position and simply ask them for coffee or a quick bite. NEVER say you’re looking for a job when reaching out. Most times, if people don’t have a personal relationship with you or if they’re not familiar with your skill set, they’re less likely to refer to you a position. Even try reaching out through social media! Hello! Take advantage of those DM’s!

2. Clean up your resume. When applying to jobs, make sure your information is accurate and clear. This is ideally one of the most important pieces in your job search. Have a few people read it over. Especially people who have more experience than you or are in your field.

3. Attend many networking events. I can’t stress again how important it is to know people in your field and it starts with networking. Remember people aren’t obligated to reach out to you (or help you for that matter), but the more you put yourself out there, the better chances you have of meeting someone that can open up that door.

4. Reach out to alumni through LinkedIn or social media. Don’t be afraid to reach out to someone from your alma matter for career advice or tips. They’re more likely to help just because you share a bond!

5. Have faith! Of course, it’s not easy, and you may be stuck not knowing what you really want to do. Everything takes time and patience, especially for your dream job! The key is to never give up, you will get there! No one shares the same path, so keep these tips in mind!

Now go follow your dreams!
