Kalief Browder’s Family Settles With New York City For $3.3M

Roommates, many of us have become invested in Kalief Browder’s story and his justice after learning he took his own life after becoming a victim of a failing justice system. Kalief was 16-years-old when he was arrested and forced to spend hundreds of days in solitary confinement. He spent three long years in jail. When he was finally released, he said he wasn’t the same as when he went in. The charges that were brought against him were dropped in 2013 upon his release.

Ever since his arrest, and then his suicide, his family has been fighting for his justice. They have recently settled with New York City for $3.3 million in his wrongful death case. “It’s bittersweet that the city had a chance to settle the case while he was alive or before his mom passed away,” Kalief’s attorney, Paul Prestia said. “But I hope his surviving family members can take some justice from this. He was a hero whose story touched so many people around the world, and I’m thankful he was a part of my life. He changed the criminal justice system.”

“The family believes the settlement is fair and reasonable,” Sanford Rubenstein, the Browder family attorney said. “But they hope that his memory will be honored with the reforms that still have to take place within our prison system.”

May Kalief Browder Rest In Peace!

How do you guys feel about this settlement, Roommates?! Let’s chat!
