If you’re currently a customer of food delivery app DoorDash, you may want to place some more security measures on your bank account and credit card information, as it’s being reported that the company recently fell victim to a massive security breach affecting millions.
Data breaches are nothing new, but they have definitely been happening all too frequently over the past few years, making customers more susceptible than ever to potentially having their personal information compromised. @CNN reports that popular food delivery app DoorDash is the latest company to suffer a data breach—one that affected almost 5 million customers.
DoorDash stated that the breach was discovered earlier this week when the company noticed unusual activity from a third-party service provider a few weeks ago. This led to an investigation, which is when it was uncovered that an unauthorized third party was able to access DoorDash user data dating back to May 4, 2019. The company firmly states that immediate measures were taken to block further access and improve security. Customers affected are those who joined DoorDash on or before April 5, 2018 and they will be notified. Those who joined after that were not affected.
The information compromised in the breach included, names, email addresses, delivery addresses, order history, phone numbers and encrypted versions of passwords. Additionally, in certain instances, the last four digits of payment cards and bank account numbers were also accessed. However, there is some sort of good news because DoorDash says that full payment card numbers and bank account information weren’t compromised, but on the flip side, driver’s license numbers of about 100,000 delivery workers were accessed.
As for what DoorDash plans to do following such a huge data breach, well the company has put stricter security measures in place in the hopes that the same issue won’t happen again. Current customers are also urged to change their passwords immediately, even if they were not affected by the breach.
