New York’s Largest Hospital System Is Giving Its Employees A $2.5K Bonus For Working During The Pandemic

TSR Health: Hazard pay has been a large concern for the thousands of essential workers who are putting their lives on the line to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Well, New York’s largest hospital system seems to be taking a step in the right direction, announcing employees will receive a bonus for their hard work.

According to the New York Post, Northwell Health, which includes a network of hospitals all over New York, has just announced that its employees will be receiving a $2,500 bonus, and one week of paid time off for working during the pandemic.

“Our dedicated staff’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been nothing short of heroic,” said Northwell Health president Michael Dowling. “Thanks to the courage and commitment of our front-line caregivers, we answered the call-in service to the patients and communities who entrust us with their care.”

The bonus and time off are reportedly available to healthcare workers like nurses, doctors, and respiratory therapists that have been directly involved in caring for patients. They will also be given to housekeepers, environmental services workers responsible for keeping the hospitals clean, and workers in corporate roles.

While Northwell, and other hospital networks like New York Presbyterian, are offering bonuses to employees, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed that federal funds be used to provide front-line workers with hazard pay. This would include transit workers, building cleaners, day care workers, and of course, medical workers.

Cuomo is relying on President Trump and Congress to provide the state with the funds to ensure people are being compensated for the work they are doing during this time.

“Pay them what they deserve. I’d say hazard pay,” Cuomo said. “Give them a 50 percent bonus, and I would do that now. “Our front-line workers are heroes. They are carrying us through this crisis.”

Where do you guys stand on the hazard pay issue? Let us know in the comments, Roomies!
