Kelis Responds To Recent Protests By Calling Out The Music Industry—“Labels And Platforms Can Start With Amending Contracts”

Kelis recently decided to speak up regarding the recent protesting around the country and the blackouts on social media, by specifically calling out the music industry. Taking to Instagram, Kelis had some harsh words for how the music industry deals with artists as it relates to the strict and widely-criticized contracts.

Earlier this week many participated in #BlackoutTuesday on Instagram in response to the recent protests occurring across the country stemming from the murder of George Floyd at the hands of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. During the blackout, no one posted (or posted very limitedly) for an entire day and instead posted a single photo of a black image.

Kelis decided to offer her two cents on the matter, as several record labels participated in the blackout and also offered their support by donating money and committing to impact change in their own ways. She posted an in-depth message on the subject on her Instagram stories.

Her message read:

“If the music industry wants to support Black lives, labels and platforms can start with amending contracts, distributing royalties, diversifying boardrooms, and retroactively paying back all the Black artists, and their families, they have built their empires on.”

As we previously reported, Kelis has previously voiced her frustrations with the music industry—most recently calling out Pharrell Williams for not properly compensating her for her first album.
