Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” Officially Replaces The Beatles As The Greatest Album Of All-Time In “Rolling Stone’s” Updated List

#Roommates, prestigious music industry magazine “Rolling Stone” recently updated its list of the “500 Greatest Albums Of All Time”—and a Marvin Gaye masterpiece has finally snatched the top spot. Marvin Gaye’s brilliant “What’s Going On” album is officially crowned the greatest album in history, knocking The Beatles from their previous first place position.

@RollingStone recently updated its list of the “500 Greatest Albums of All Time” 17 years after it was first published—and as a result, many albums that were previously not included or placed significantly lower than fans thought they should be, have made their way up the list. However, no one is topping Marvin Gaye, who now has the honor of having the greatest album of all time courtesy of “What’s Going On,” the album that many consider to be his best work.

“Rolling Stone” decided to overhaul its list after many fans had complained for years that there was too much rock included and not enough representation of more modern music and black artists. The list now features 154 new albums not previously on the 500 list, and 86 albums from this century. The change represents a massive shift for the magazine, moving to recognize more contemporary albums and a wider range of tastes.

Among the standouts are the addition of two Prince albums to the top 50, “Sign O’ the Times” at 45 and “Purple Rain” at number eight. “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” had the biggest leap for a hip hop album by jumping more than 300 spots to now sit at number 10 overall. Additionally, six Kanye West albums also found there way on the highly-coveted list. You can check out all 500 albums on “Rolling Stone’s” website.

“What’s Going On,” released in 1971, couldn’t be a more relevant album to listen to right now, which shows how timeless the music of Marvin Gaye is and continues to be.
