Roomies, just a few days ago, the folks on Twitter discussed the similarities in handbags after fashion brand Guess came out with their line of handbags that are very similar to the design of Telfar’s ‘Shopping Bag.’ Guess was selling their leather ‘Logo G-Tote’ through third-party retailers such as Hudson’s Bay, Macy’s, and Dillard’s. However, according to Paper Mag, they have had a change of heart due to the recent backlash online.
Guess released a statement via Paper Mag announcing they will be holding off selling the bags at this time. The statement reads, “Signal Brands, the handbag licensee of Guess, Inc., has voluntarily halted the sale of its G-Logo totes. Some on social media have compared the totes to Telfar Global’s shopping bags.”
It continued, “Signal Brands does not wish to create any impediments to Telfar Global’s success and, as such, has independently decided to stop selling the G-logo totes.” Some would say that the news is an example of just how powerful the voice of Black Twitter truly is. Roommates seemed to agree and sounded off in the comments. One wrote, “I swear social media (BLACK TWITTER) runs everything. LMFAO, they will spook tf out of anything and anyone.” Another commented, “They got Twitter bullied out of selling them jawns.”
This isn’t the first time Black Twitter has made an uproar about companies using designs that they didn’t like. If you recall, last month, we reported that folks were upset after Alife and Champion dropped an HBCU hoodie collection that was sold through Urban Outfitters. Some felt like the design of the collection that showcased HBCUs was lackluster and looked thrown together.
