Lil Nas X On Being A Role Model: “Of Course I Want To Spread Good Ideals, But I’m Not Nobody’s Parents”

Roommates, when it comes to the artists we love, we know that they have die-hard fans who look up to them. Whether it’s because of their music, values, or views, they all use their platforms to share a message. Sometimes artists receive backlash from things they say or do, even if they’re keeping it real. Some feel as though artists have a moral duty to be mindful of their platforms because their younger fans view them as role models. However, not all artists feel like it’s their responsibility and feel as though the responsibility should fall on the fans’ parents. One of those artists is Lil Nas X.

In a recent interview with GQ Magazine, Lil Nas X opened up about being a role model, including the effect he has on his fans, both young and old. Nas has made it easy for fans to open up to him on various social media platforms, especially his younger fans. Many who are a part of the LGBTQ community have shared coming out stories with him. Although some would appreciate the gesture, Nas X advised during the interview that he isn’t looking to be anyone’s “role model.”

Nas said, “At first, I felt a sense of responsibility. But now, I kind of just don’t care. It’s not my job. Of course, I want to spread good ideals, but I’m not nobody’s parents.” He continued, “At the end of the day, I’m just doing me, and hoping everybody else is following the lead and doing themselves.” As we recently reported, Lil Nas X received backlash after releasing the music video for his recent single, ‘MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name).’ In addition, he also received backlash for the infamous Satan shoes that got blocked by Nike in March.  Since then, Nas has laid low and has been focused on getting his driver’s license, which finally happened!

This isn’t the first time an artist has spoken out about being a role model. Although Cardi B doesn’t mind the task, she opened up earlier this year to Billboard following the controversy surrounding her single, ‘W.A.P,’ featuring Megan Thee Stallion. Cardi said, “Am I a role model? I know I’m a role model because I know there’s a lot of women like me. At the end of the day, I know I’m a bi**h that made it through because I work my a*s off, not because luck fell on my thighs.”

Roomies, what do yall think about Lil Nas X’s stance?
