The Fugees brought the nostalgia when they reunited on stage in New York City on Wednesday for the first time in 15 years.
The day before, it was announced that the legendary group will be heading on tour as they celebrate the 25th anniversary of their classic album “The Score.” The first date announced was Wednesday, September 22nd in New York at a disclosed location.
The pop-up concert was hosted by Global Citizen and Live Nation. Once Wednesday arrived, the group hit the stage at Pier 17, as they gave fans a preview of what they could expect for the remainder of the tour, which officially picks up in November.
According to Rolling Stone, while on stage the dismantling of the group years ago was discussed, and Lauryn Hill said to the crowd, “There was destiny in us coming together, there was destiny in the touring, and there was destiny in the people we inspired.” She had described their past as “complicated and beautiful,” nonetheless, what they had accomplished is still being celebrated to this day, and will continue to be celebrated for the duration of the tour.
As we previously reported, Wyclef Jean talked about the group’s reunion and said, “As I celebrate 25 years with the Fugees, my first memory was that we vowed, from the gate, we would not just do music we would be a movement. We would be a voice for the unheard, and in these challenging times, I am grateful once again, that God has brought us together.”
Lauryn also said, ” I wasn’t even aware the 25th anniversary had arrived until someone brought it to my attention. I decided to honor this significant project, its anniversary, and the fans who appreciated the music by creating a peaceful platform where we could unite, perform the music we loved, and set an example of reconciliation for the world.”
The tour picks up in Chicago on November 2nd and will conclude in Ghana on December 18th.
