Miley Cyrus’ Plane Makes Emergency Landing After Being Struck By Lightning

Miley Cyrus recently experienced a situation that’s giving nightmares and the show ‘Manifest.’ Apparently, the singer along with employees, friends and family faced severe weather conditions while traveling in South America. Lightning struck Miley’s plane — forcing their flight to make an emergency landing. Miley took to Instagram early Wednesday with an update on the situation.

Miley Says She’s Safe 

“To my fans and everyone worried after hearing about my flight to Asunción. Our plane was caught in a major unexpected storm and struck by lighting,” Miley wrote in an Instagram caption. 

The superstar shared a two-second clip that shows terrifying, bright flashes outside the window of a plane in the air. Following the flash, multiple people in the background gasphed. At this time, nor the video or Miley have revealed how many people were on board or the size of the plane. Nonetheless, Miley let it be known that she and her peeps are safe.

“My crew, band, friends and family who were all traveling with me are safe after an emergency landing. We were unfortunately unable to fly into Paraguay. I LOVE YOU,” Miley wrote. 

Miley was headed to perform at a multi-day festival called ‘Asuncionico.’ However, weather conditions have gotten so bad in the area that the entire festival was cancelled. They started by cancelling day one, but ultimately decided to scrap the entire festival for safety reasons. The festival made the announcement via Twitter and said they’d have more information on refunds by Monday, March 28.

How Can This Happen? 

The pop star also shared a photo of where the lightning hit the aircraft. Apparently, the lightning caused some damage to what looks like a wing. However, neither authorities or Miley have confirmed this detail.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, commercial planes get zapped by the natural phenomenon between one to two times a year. Turns out, those bigger planes are built to take a hit. Not only that, but the NOAA says airplanes actually stroke the beast.

“Actually, aircraft often initiate the strike because their presence enhances the ambient electric fields typical for thunderstorms and facilitates electrical breakdown through air,” the NOAA wrote on their site.

Lightning Struck…Now What?

Planes require a mandatory inspection for damage after lightning strikes. Such a situation sometimes requires an emergency landing. That is the course of action Miley’s pilot(s) chose. Again, it’s unclear what kind of plane was carrying Miley, her team and personal peeps. However, the NOAA says the situation is a little different when it comes to lightning striking non-commercial planes.

“There has not been a lightning-caused commercial transport airplane crash in many decades, but that’s not true of the other groups of aircraft,” the NOAA site said.
