Abbott Nutrition & Nestlé Have Sent Millions Of Baby Formula Cans From Europe To The U.S. Amid Shortage

PORTLAND, OR - MAY 12: Katie Wussler, a program coordinator at Mother & Child Education Center, throws away recalled Similac baby formula, which the company would not replace or reimburse because the donated supplies did not come with a receipt, on May 12, 2022 in Portland, Oregon. More than 60 percent of Mother & Childs formula supply was affected by the recall, and like many similar non-profits they are struggling to meet increased demand from mothers who are unable to find or afford formula in stores. Executive Director Maura White said she's had to turn away mothers looking for formula about three times a week since the recall was announced. (Photo by Nathan Howard/Getty Images)

Help is on the way! As many families struggle amid the ongoing U.S. shortage of baby formula, the top companies producing the products, Abbott Nutrition and Nestlé, have stepped up to provide a solution. According to Business Insider, both companies have begun flying in baby formula from other countries in Europe and the United Kingdom.

Abbott revealed they have flown in millions of cans of powdered formula from their facility in Ireland. Abbott has also increased production at its locations in Ohio and Arizona. On Monday, the company reached an agreement with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to allow the company to resume production of Similac baby formula at its plant in Michigan.

In a statement, Abbott’s CEO, Robert Ford, said, “This is a major step toward re-opening our Sturgis facility so we can ease the nationwide formula shortage. We know millions of parents and caregivers depend on us, and we’re deeply sorry that our voluntary recall worsened the nationwide formula shortage.”

One of Abbott’s competitors, Nestlé, has also followed suit. Reports show Nestlé, which makes Gerber and Alfamino formulas, said Tuesday it was accelerating production in Switzerland and the Netherlands and flying formulas to the U.S. from Europe. In addition, the company advised Business Insider that they prioritize deliveries to hospitals, with a particular emphasis on formulas made for babies who have allergies to cow’s milk protein.

While Abbott and Nestlé are working hard, they aren’t the only ones. Mead Johnson, which produces Enfamil at three locations in the U.S., has granted its employees unlimited overtime to combat the shortage to boost production. This is very important because Enfamil represents half the U.S. formula market. Roommates, do you think this is a good idea?
