On January 10, Adult Swim cartoon Black Dynamite will air a musical special about police brutality called “The Wizard Of Watts” featuring characters voiced by Erykah Badu and Tyler The Creator. Erykah Badu is a ball of fun and Tyler’s personality is very outside of the box. This seems like it will be a very interesting episode to watch.
During the 1 hour-long episode, the show’s hero Black Dynamite will be hit with a brick by a rioter while he’s at a protest against police brutality. After being knocked unconscious, in a surreal world he will fight to protect the citizens from the “corrupt police”. The show airs January 10th at 10;30 pm EST. Make sure you record the show so that we an discuss it!
It’s nothing new for animated shows to discuss heavy topics such as this one. Shows like Family Guy, The Simpsons, The Boondocks, and more have discussed topics such as Ebola, War, Racism, Domestic Violence, and even specifically Robin Williams’ Suicide (before it occurred).
There is something about an animated show that is not only surreal but meant to be entertaining that surprisingly covers deeper issues that plague society.
Police Brutality is definitely an issue in our society right now. With the deaths of Mike Brown, Eric Garner, Tamar Rice, and now Antonio Martin….this episode comes at the perfect time!
