Today officially marks one year since Ahmaud Arbery’s passing. On this day last year, he was killed by Greg and Travis McMichael while jogging near Brunswick in Glynn County, Georgia. It wasn’t until months later that the McMichaels and William Bryan were arrested for his death. As Ahmaud’s family continues to fight for justice in his case, his mother, Wanda Cooper has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the men responsible for her son’s death.
According to WSBTV, Glynn County police, and Jackie Johnson and George Barnhill, the district attorneys who originally handled the case, were also named in the lawsuit.
The lawsuit alleged, “For nearly three months, Glynn County police officers, the chief of police, and two prosecutors conspired to hide the circumstances surrounding Ahmaud’s death and to protect the men who murdered him.” The lawsuit continued to allege that the cover-up started to take place on February 23, 2020, when the Glynn County police first arrived at the scene of the shooting.
The killing of Ahmaud Arbery didn’t make national news until a few months after the murder. The killing was also captured on video and later released. As previously reported, the McMichaels and William Bryan weren’t arrested for Ahmaud’s death until the beginning of May 2020.
The McMicahels claimed they were trying to make a citizen’s arrest after they claimed that they believed Ahmaud was trying to break into a nearby construction site. Bryan admitted to following Ahmaud and recording the fatal shooting on his phone.
TMZ reports that Wanda Cooper is seeking at least $1 million in damages.
