Authorities Say The Man Placed The 911 Call On Himself

According to the outlet, 37-year-old Robert Delvin is believed to have placed the 911 call that led police to the East Gate Shopping Plaza in Marietta, Georgia.

Police say they received the report around 8 a.m. on Saturday morning and found Delvin at the scene. Officer Chuck McPhilamy explained that authorities “immediately began evacuating the area.”

Based on the circumstances and statements made by Devlin, officers determined the threat to be credible and immediately began evacuating the area.

Delvin was arrested and around noon members of the Cobb County Police Department’s bomb squad, Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), and FBI, discovered a “device that resembled a pipe bomb from Devlin’s truck,” as reported by the Marietta Daily Journal.

Delvin’s Device Was Found To Be Inoperable

After hours of investigation, police determined Delvin’s device to indeed contain explosives. However, it lacked the mechanism necessary “to be considered a fully assembled explosive device,” as reported by the outlet.

Police reopened the shopping center around 3 p.m. later that day.

The Investigation Into The Bomb Threat Reportedly Remains Open

According to the outlet, Delvin has been charged with “misdemeanor counts of making a false report and possessing a hoax explosive device,” Additionally, he has been charged with “making a false public alarm,” which amounts to a felony.

Furthermore, Devlin is reportedly being held at the Cobb County jail and his bond is $60,000.

However, despite the Alabama man being charged and held in jail, authorities are still keeping the investigation open. Officer McPhilamy shared a brief explanation.

The investigation remains open, and it is unclear why he traveled to Marietta, or called 911 on himself. Anyone with information is urged to contact MPD Detective Bollinger at 770-794-5345.
