#Roommates, Black History Month starts in just a few days and to get a jump on the celebration of all things melanin, Apple recently announced a twist on one of its most popular products. The Apple Watch is getting a Black History Month makeover in the form of a new limited edition “Black Unity” watch dripping in colors from the motherland.

According to @Verge, Apple is starting off Black History Month 2021 with a major bang! The brand has officially announced the launch of a limited edition Apple Watch with a new watch band and watch face in combination colors of black, red and green. It was also revealed that a portion of the proceeds of the new Apple Watch will go toward select civil rights organizations. The brand says it’ll be “supporting six global organizations” as part of this product launch, including the Black Lives Matter Support Fund, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, and European Network Against Racism.

The Apple Watch is part of a new Black Unity Collection of products in colors meant to represent the Pan-African flag. There are no other changes to the Apple Watch Series 6 and it’s priced starting at $399, with the band retailing separately for $49. Both will be available for purchase beginning February 1st at Apple and Target—however, while the watch band will remain on sale all year, the watch will only be sold during the month of February. That’s not the only way that Apple is showing its support for the Black community, as there will also be a new hub in the App Store highlighting Black-owned businesses and developers.

Meanwhile, Apple Music will get “curated playlists, essays, original videos” and other content highlighting Black artists and Apple Maps is getting curated recommendations from EatOkra, an app which highlights Black-owned restaurants. The company also plans to “curate stories focused on Black families and experiences in the Apple TV and Apple News apps and highlight Black authors in Apple Books and Apple Podcasts.”

Apple is among a number of tech giants that previously pledged over a hundred million dollars toward racial equity initiatives, initially announcing a $100 fund back in June 2020. Additionally, Apple also announced plans to create a developer education center in Detroit and support future plans for a tech hub for HBCUs in Atlanta.
