A Springfield babysitter will only spend 30 days in jail after admitting to molesting an 8-year-old boy. 5 years of probation will follow this sentencing. Court documents state that Joseph Presley molested the boy on at least two occasions while babysitting him in his own home between the ages of eight and nine. They also say that the boy tried to call his mother, but that Presley took the phone away and sent him to his room.
Presley’s defense attorney Dee Wampler defended his client’s punishment by saying that Presley having to register as a sex offender is enough punishment, because placing him with real criminals would be a detriment to him. “Do we really want to take a boy that’s not institutionalized, that has not been in prison before, and put him in prison with some real sex molesters, and some real rapists? So that he can really learn the trade? Is that what we want?” Wampler said. This way of thinking seems to be consistent with people of a particular background such as Brock Turner who is set to be released from prison yesterday after barely serving half of a 6 month sentence for raping a young lady.
Like many of us, Child Advocacy Center Executive Director Barbara Brown-Johnson is appalled by the judge’s decision on behalf of Presley and doesn’t feel that the punishment fits the crime at all. “That’s is simply not enough, that doesn’t deter people from doing this sort of crime against children,” she told KSPR. “You have to deal with the child victim in from of you, and saying that a perpetrator should get a lesser sentence because of their perpetration, when they’re an adult, that makes no sense whatsoever.”
The maximum sentence for Presley’s charges was 15 years in prison. He was originally sentenced to 10 years however the judge changed his mind and Presley won’t go to jail unless he violates his probation.
Getting 30 days is absolutely ridiculous! What about the psychological effects on the child? Those last more than a month, I mean the child was being abused for over a year. SMH!
