When it comes to compiling a list of some of the greatest artists, you can count on a few publications to do so, like Billboard and Rolling Stone. There is always a debate about which artist should have more recognition, and when Rolling Stone dropped it’s The 100 Greatest Music Videos’ list today, it caused a mixture of reactions online. Rolling Stone dropped the list in honor of MTVs 40th anniversary. However, it had some significant changes from the last time the list was released in the 80s.
The last list of 100 music videos had “Sledgehammer” – Peter Gabriel at number one. Followed by “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, “Losing My Religion” – R.E.M., “This Note’s For You” by Neil Young, and “Nothing Compares 2 U” by Sinad O’Connor in the top five. As you can expect, the music changes over the decades, and for this years list, it was different artists. Queen Bey, Beyonc topped the list with her music video for Formation! Tidal broke the news on Twitter. Bey is in good company. Other music videos in the top five are Johnny Cash, “Hurt,” Madonna, “Vogue,” Childish Gambino, “This Is America,” and New Order, “The Perfect Kiss.
The Roommates were quick to point out that the King Of Pop wasnt listed in the top five for his highly influential music video for Thriller. Surprisingly the video was listed in the previous list from the 80s at number 16. DJ A-One, Xscapes official DJ, stepped into The Shade Room and commented about MJ. Of all time??? Shes without a doubt one of the greatest artists EVER!!! If she shouldnt be number one, who should?! Lets not say Michael Jacksons Thriller. Art has come a long way in 30years.
