Yesterday Bill Cosby’s legal team urged an appeals court to reseal Cosby’s 2005 testimony where a Temple University employee said he drugged and molested her at his home. She later brought a lawsuit against him, but settled for a disclosed amount and the documents were sealed.
However, the panel of judges feel that the request to reseal the documents is pointless since it has already made headlines and the damage has already been done. But, Cosby’s legal team is hoping that a ruling works in their favor as they do not want those documents to be used against him in an upcoming criminal case in Pennsylvania and the many other lawsuits filed throughout the country.
In the testimony Cosby admitted to multiple affairs, and said he obtained Quaaludes and gave them to women with hopes of seducing them. Last year the documents became public by Associated Press U.S. District Judge Eduardo Robreno who felt that the public had the right to know.
In the court papers filed, Cosby’s lawyer George Gowen argued that the actor was promised the 2005 testimony would remain confidential and the “private and embarrassing testimony” would cause injury to the star who “relies on his reputation for his livelihood.”
Gayle C. Sproul, a lawyer for the Associated Press argued against the resealing of the documents stating that Cosby had not only spoken out on issues around marriage and morality, but he also profited through books, TV shows and advertising.
The judges gave no indication of when they would rule. Cosby’s lawyers say a ruling in their favor would allow Cosby to argue in the other cases against him that the testimony should never have been made public in the first place and should not be admitted as evidence.
Bill Cosby, 78, is currently free on a $1 million bail.
