Ok, we know, theres news of a reboot or a remake like every other week these days. But this reboot is one that people have been asking for.
A complete re-imagining of #TheBoondocks for the modern era is in development and has the original series creator #AaronMcGruder on board, @entertainmentweekly reports. This may be the reboot we need given todays social climate, which is missing a perspective like that of McGruder.
The announcement was made this morning at the 2019 Annecy International Animated Film Festival. McGruders The Boondocks was known back in the day for its social commentary on issues and moments that had an effect on the Black community such as R. Kellys trial and Hurricane Katrina.
The show, which premiered back in November 2005 on Cartoon Networks late-night Adult Swim, is based off McGruders comic strip by the same name. The voice actors included Regina King, John Witherspoon and Cedric Yarbrough but it wasnt immediately confirmed if they are coming back.
The reboot is said to be satire for the modern era that will chronicle the adventures of Huey Freeman and his family against the evil local government now ran by tyrant Uncle Ruckus.
It will take place in the fictional Woodcrest County, Maryland.
The tea may have already been spilled a few months back when Witherspoon, who voices Granddad, teased a comeback on The Joe Rogan Experience.
Im on the cartoon. What is it? The Boondocks? I didnt change my voice for The Boondocks. And they coming back, Withersppon said. The Boondocks is coming back. Its one of the best cartoons Ive ever been on.
Back in February, McGruder resurrected his Boondocks comic strip to poke fun at the current state of America. As shown in a series of Instagram posts shared by Charlamagne Tha God, it featured characters Huey, Riley, Granddad, and Uncle Ruckus, as well as satirical takes on President Donald Trump and the Robert Mueller investigation.
Roommates, are you excited for this one? Let us know!
