#Roommates, back in the day, when you wanted to search the Internet, you had to use the only web browser available, Internet Explorer—but now that is about to permanently be a thing of the past. Microsoft has just officially announced that after years on a steady decline, Internet Explorer finally will cease operations in June of 2022.

The end of an era for the tech world is quickly approaching, as the once dominant web browser Internet Explorer will be shut down for good within the next year. According to @CNN, tech giant Microsoft recently announced a decision that many saw coming, as the company confirmed that Internet Explorer is being taken off life support and buried for good. On June 15, 2022, Internet Explorer will be a distant memory—which isn’t that surprising considering that Microsoft appeared to be done with it years ago. Additionally, Microsoft’s 365 apps, including Microsoft Office, will no longer be available within the next few months.

Unable to compete with superior web browsers such as Mozilla’s Firefox, Google’s Chrome, and Apple’s Safari, Internet Explorer had trouble keeping up in the arena that it created decades ago. When it comes to statistics, Internet Explorer currently has just 5% of web browser usage—compared to Google’s Chrome, which leads the market with 69% of browser usage among consumers. Debuting back in 1995, IE once revolutionized the web browsing experience, but couldn’t sustain its success as online needs and habits of users changed and progressed.

Speaking about the announcement, Microsoft Program Manager for Microsoft Edge said, “We are announcing that the future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge. Not only is Microsoft Edge a faster, more secure and more modern browsing experience than Internet Explorer, but it is also able to address a key concern: compatibility for older, legacy websites and applications.”
