After millions of people throughout social media have demanded that another look be taken into the Elijah McClain case, and for justice to be served, it looks like the beginning stages of doing so are finally starting to get in motion.
On Wednesday, Colorado Governor Jared Polis took to social media to announce that his team will examine the case. He said, “Public confidence in our law enforcement processes incredibly important now more than ever. A fair and objective process free form real or perceived bias for investigating officer-involved killings is critical.”
He continued to say, “I am hearing from many Coloradans who have expressed concerns with the investigation of Elijah McClain’s death. As a result, I have instructed my legal council to examine what the state can do and we are assessing the next steps.”

According to Sentential Colorado, Governor Polis could order the Colorado Attorney General’s office to pick up the case. Dave Young, the 17th Judicial District Attorney, who was responsible for clearing the three police officers who detained McClain, said he would not reopen the case unless new evidence is presented.
At the moment, it is unclear what steps Polis will be taking. However, local Aurora lawmakers were reportedly already in the process of planning a renewed independent investigation after canceling a contract with an attorney from Connecticut and a former police officer, who were examining the events that led to Elijah’s death.
As we previously reported, Elijah died of a heart attack at the age of 23 after three officers responding to a suspicious person call on August 24th, 2019, put him in a carotid chokehold and had him injected with a heavy dose of ketamine. He survived two heart attacks on his way to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced brain dead three days later and died on August 30th of 2019.
The call for justice comes almost a year following his death, as many uprisings across the world have taken place following the killings of Amaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd.
