Derek Chauvin Requests Lighter Sentence Following Conviction In George Floyd Case—Asking For Time Served Or Probation

Roommates, as we await his June 25th sentencing hearing following his conviction for the murder of George Floyd, currently incarcerated Derek Chauvin has just requested through his attorney to receive a lighter prison sentence in the form of time served or probation. During a recent court hearing, Derek Chauvin made the request to his sentence and also cited that he is the “victim of a broken system.”

Derek Chauvin is attempting to use every maneuver he can in an attempt to be released from prison. Through his attorney Eric Nelson, Chauvin formally asked a Minnesota judge to give him a lighter prison sentence of either a probation term or a much lighter sentence than what is currently suggested by state guidelines.

The reasoning for Chauvin’s request, includes his lack of criminal history, his former time as a Minnesota police officer and the heightened risk that he could be victimized in prison. You’ll recall that he has been in prison since the guilty verdict was announced in the George Floyd case on April 21st.

Meanwhile, Minnesota state prosecutors have requested that Chauvin receive a 30-year prison sentence. According to the official court filing, the document stated that prosecutors would “properly account for the profound impact of [Chauvin’s] conduct on the victim, the victim’s family, and the community.”

Derek Chauvin is facing a maximum 75-year-prison sentence for the May 2020 murder of George Floyd.
