Its no surprise that Glamour’s decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner as one of this year’s “Woman of the Year” has really set some people off but one man really felt some type of way and decided to cut his ties with Glamour.
Moira Smith, a former police officer and hero during the attacks on the The World Trade Center, was also awarded “Woman of the Year” after she lost her life while she bravely attempted to save many lives that day. Well according to Entertainment Tonight, her husband, James did not like the fact that Glamour decided to put his wife and Caitlyn in the same category.
Smith first wrote a letter to the Editor-in-Chief, Cindi Leive on Facebook stating that their choice to honor his beloved wife and Jenner for the same award is “insulting” to all women who are normal citizens making a difference in every day lives. He named local and traditional heroes like doctors, police officers, firefighter as everyday heroes who deserve to be rewarded before Caitlyn. He also named a former male Olympic athlete turned transgendered woman at 66 who is already very successful since her early years.
“Was there no woman in America, or the rest of the world, more deserving than this man?” Smith said. “At a time when we have women in the armed forces fighting and dying for our country, heroic doctors fighting deadly diseases, women police officers and firefighters putting their lives on the line for total strangers, brave women overcoming life threatening diseases…the list of possibilities goes on…is this the best you could do?”
Smith concluded his letter with, “After discussing this slap in the face to the memory of our Hero with my family, I have decided to return Moira’s award to Glamour Magazine.” Yikes!
Well it looks Glamour wasn’t going to let that one just slide under the rug and decided to put James in his place! The magazine responded back to Smith, telling him that they will not take Jenner’s award back from her, nor will they take accept Moira’s award back to their home office.
“Glamour was proud to honor Police Officer Moira Smith in 2001 and we stand by our decision to honor Caitlyn Jenner among our class of winners in 2015,” a Glamour spokesperson speaks to ET Tonight. “Caitlyn Jenner has helped shine a light on the problems faced by transgender youth and given voice to a community that is often unheard. Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards recognizes brave, bold women who in their individual ways have all made a significant difference in the world.”
