Doja Cat recently sat down for a candid interview on Apple Music. Among other topics, she addressed criticism for wearing a shirt featuring controversial comic Sam Hyde.

The backlash arose after she posted and deleted a photo of herself wearing the shirt back in October. This led to fans expressing their disappointment in the comment section.

Doja Cat’s Controversial Instagram Post

Outside of his profession, Hyde has gained a reputation for his alleged ties to the neo-Nazi movement, per the Los Angeles Times. His followers reportedly consist of antisemites and misogynists.

Doja responded to the backlash by explaining to Ebro Darden that she didn’t know about the problematic implications associated with Hyde. She added that she never intended to promote any harmful ideologies.

While she received plenty of criticism from fans and social media users, Doja stressed that her intent was not to attack people or hurt their feelings. She stated that her level of fame had made her immune to negative opinions. The singer-rapper suggested that people had exaggerated the situation.

“It didn’t affect the world in a way where we have to look behind our backs,” Doja expressed, referring to the social media outcry that erupted over her shirt.

Doja Clarifies Comment About Hating Her Fans

Doja also addressed the controversy surrounding her alleged hatred toward her fans. The ‘Paint The Town Red’ singer had reportedly lost over 250,000 followers in July when she refused to tell her supporters that she loved them.

A fan had tweeted, “I wanna hear you say (I do love you guys) as usual you say to your fans.” Doja responded, “I don’t though cuz I don’t even know y’all.”

The remark prompted a Twitter user to lash out at the Grammy winner, telling her she’d be “working at a grocery store” if it wasn’t for her fans supporting her music.

But Doja seemed unfazed by the outrage. She responded, “Nobody forced you idk why you’re talking to me like you’re my mother b***h you sound like a crazy person.”

In her latest interview, however, she emphasized that she never said she hates her fans. Instead, Doja Cat suggested blogs had misquoted the comment and blown it out of proportion.

“One thing that I do want to set straight is that you’ll never see a direct quote of me saying, ‘I hate my fans.’ Not once,” she told Darden. “But it’s a really big misquoted thing where everybody is saying, she hates her fans.”

Doja Cat said she hoped to distance herself from the world of fame and maintain some level of privacy. She believes that her humor may not always come across in the way she’d hoped, which is why people fail to realize when she’s serious or not.
