During this time, many high-profile inmates are requesting to be released from prison early as the coronavirus continues to spread, and as the virus also makes its way inside different jails and prisons amongst inmates and corrections officers. The latest inmate that has been granted an early release is Michael Cohen, the former attorney to Donald Trump.
As we previously reported, back in 2018 Cohen told it all and plead guilty to campaign finance fraud, and admitted he arranged payments to women in exchange for their silence about alleged affairs with Trump.
According to CNN, Cohen was scheduled to be released in November 2021, but his attorney Michael Adler confirmed that he will be released due to the coronavirus pandemic. He has been serving his three-year sentence at a federal prison camp in Otisville, NY. So far 14 inmates and seven staff members have tested positive for the virus.
Cohen will reportedly serve the remainder of his sentence from home confinement. However, he will have to undergo a 14-day quarantine at the camp before he is released.
As previously mentioned, Cohen also pled guilty to multiple counts of tax evasion and bank fraud. He admitted to a judge the payments he arranged for the women were “at the direction of the candidate” (Donald Trump). One of the women that were reportedly paid to keep silent about the alleged affairs was Stormy Daniels, who reportedly received $130,000.
Other high-profile inmates that have been looking to be released due to the spread of the coronavirus include Bill Cosby, rapper YNW Melly, and R. Kelly, all who have been denied. However, Tekashi 6ix9ine, who was scheduled to be released later this year received an early release amid the spread of the virus.
