Drake Responds To Grammys Snubbing Controversy: ‘I Think We Should Stop Allowing Ourselves To Be Shocked Every Year’

The music industry has been in a funk about these Grammy nominations that were announced Tuesday. Everyone and their mama had something to say about the academy snubbing artists this year and despite Drake being a nominee himself, he decided to add his two cents to the controversy.

To be blunt, fans were just certain The Weeknd’s “After Hours” would be nominated for Album of the Year but no one expected a complete shut out.

Other popular artists who saw commercial and critical success but secured little to no nominations included Lil Baby and Nicki Minaj. Not to mention, not a single woman was nominated for R&B Album of the year.

Social media has been abuzz about these snubs and Drake, who has garnered two nominations for his single “Laugh Now, Cry Later,” broke his silence today about the Grammys.

Simply put, Drake says people should stop being surprised that the Grammys get it wrong.

“I think we should stop allowing ourselves to be shocked every year by the disconnect between impactful music and these awards and just accept that what once was the highest form of recognition may no longer matter to the artists that exist now and the ones that come after,” Drake wrote in a statement posted to his Instagram story. “It’s like a relative you keep expecting to fix up but they just can’t change their ways.”

He went on to share his own personal letdown about the Weeknd’s snub.

“The other day I said the @theweeknd was a lock for either album or song of the year along with countless other reasonable assumptions and it just never goes that way,” Drake said.

He also shared he felt Lil Baby, Pop Smoke, Party Next Door and PopCaan were all snubbed and suggested creating something of our own.

“This is a great time for somebody to start something new that we can build up over time and pass on to the generations to come.”
