The hip hop community is in mourning today after it was reported that Ecstasy, of the legendary rap group Whodini, has passed away at the age of 56.

Known for his signature Zorro-style hat, Ecstasy helped form the group with member Jalil Hutchins in 1982 out of Brooklyn, New York.

His cause of death was not immediately known but the prayers and tributes began to roll in Wednesday afternoon from members of the hip hop community.

“One love to Ecstasy of the legendary #Whodini,” Questlove of The Roots said on Twitter. “This man was legendary and a pivotal member of one of the most legendary groups in hip hop. This is sad man.”

Whodini is known for its hit singles, “The Haunted House of Rock,” “Friends” and “Freaks Come Out at Night,” that are considered classics today.

The pioneering hip hop group got its flowers two years ago at the 3rd Annual Black Music Honors where they were honored with the Hip Hop Icon Award and a tribute from fellow icons Doug E. Fresh, Yo-Yo and Monie Love, who all took the stage to perform their classic hits, according to Revolt.

Following the news of Ecstasy’s death, Jermaine Dupri took to his IG to pay tribute to the icon. “My God, this one hurts me so bad, I can’t even believe I’m posting this,” he said. “Ex, you know I love you. Thank you for every word, every conversation, every good time. May your soul rest in power.”

DJ D Nice shared an old photo of Ecstasy rocking his signature hat with the caption, “This one hurts. Rest peacefully, Ecstasy. Whodini will forever be one of my favorite rap groups. One love, bro. You will be missed.

2020 has proven to be a hard year for many, including the loss of some of our iconic figures. Just recently we also said goodbye to Tommy “Tiny” Lister, who was known for his iconic character Deebo in “Friday” among other roles.
