Ed Sheeran Sued For Allegedly Copying Marvin Gaye’s ‘Let’s Get It On’

British singer Ed Sheeran reached major success with his last project “X”. His hit single “Thinking Out Loud” granted him tons of success, which included winning Song of the Year at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards.

However, it looks like Sheeran may be headed to court over his hit single.

According to Vibe, he’s being sued for allegedly copying Marvin Gaye’s classic 1973 hit, “Let’s Get It On”. If you guys can recall, last year Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were sued for sampling a Marvin Gaye track, in which his family was granted $7.4 million.

This time the family of Ed Townsend, who co-wrote and created the musical components for “Let’s Get It On”, is suing Sheeran for copyright infringement. The lawsuit claims that he copied the “heart” of the song.

The lawsuit reads, “The melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic compositions of ‘Thinking’ are substantially and/or strikingly similar to the drum composition of ‘Let’s.’”

The lawsuit, which was filed in federal court in the Southern District of New York, asks for the jury to consider the damages at a jury trial.

Ed Townsend passed away back in 2003.
