Roommates, if you’ve ever seen an episode of Black Mirror, you’ll understand exactly how far-fetched this idea sounds. But, Elon Musk is convinced his latest invention will do more good than harm.
According to CNN, Elon Musk is in the process of creating bluetooth implants that will connect your brain to your mobile device. He claims the devices could “enable telepathy and repair motor function” in people with injuries and disabilities.
In a presentation, the Tesla CEO says his ‘Neuralink’ devices will consist of a tiny chip connected to 1,000 wires. The chip features a USB port and connects to a small computer worn over the ear. The computer allows the chip to connect your brain to your smartphone and give you what Elon calls “telepathic abilities”.
“If you’re going to stick something in a brain, you want it not to be large,” he says.
Neuralink says the devices can be used by people looking to boost their memory, or by stroke victims, cancer patients, quadriplegics, and others with disabilities.
The company says up to 10 devices can be placed in a patient’s brain. The chips will connect to an iPhone app that the user can control.
The devices also require a special surgical procedure done by a robot built by Neuralink. The robot, which will be operated by a surgeon, will drill 2 millimeter holes in a person’s skull. The chip part of the device will plug the hole in the patient’s skull.
“The interface to the chip is wireless, so you have no wires poking out of your head,” Elon says. “That’s very important.”
Trials are set to start before the end of 2020.
Will you guys be copping a device, Roomies?
