Florida Braces For “Historic” Hurricane Ian As Governor Ron DeSantis Warns: It’s Too Late For Many To Safely Evacuate

and Governor Ron DeSantis is now warning residents that it&&num;8217&semi;s too late for many of them to evacuate safely from the state&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Desantis called the storm &&num;8220&semi;catastrophic&&num;8221&semi; early Wednesday&comma; hours before it&&num;8217&semi;s expected to make landfall just north of Fort Myers this afternoon&comma; according to the <a href&equals;"https&colon;&sol;&sol;nypost&period;com&sol;2022&sol;09&sol;28&sol;desantis-its-too-late-for-many-to-safely-evacuate-hurricane-ian&sol;" target&equals;"&lowbar;blank" rel&equals;"noopener"><strong>New York Post<&sol;strong><&sol;a>&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<blockquote><p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It’s no longer possible to safely evacuate&comma;” DeSantis warned residents in the wide area around Charlotte County&comma; where Ian is expected to make landfall&period; &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;It’s time to hunker down and prepare for this storm&comma;” he stressed&period;<&sol;p><&sol;blockquote>&NewLine;<h3 style&equals;"text-align&colon; and &&num;8220&semi;do what you need to do to stay safe&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<blockquote><p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Do what you need to do to stay safe&period; If you are where that storm is approaching&comma; you’re already in hazardous conditions&period; It’s going to get a lot worse very quickly&period; So please hunker down&comma;” he repeated&period;<&sol;p><&sol;blockquote>&NewLine;<p><amp-twitter data-tweetid&equals;"1575103067946565633" layout&equals;"responsive" width&equals;"600" height&equals;"480"><&sol;amp-twitter><&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>Maximum wind speeds have already been recorded at a whopping 155 mph&comma; with Ian currently &&num;8220&semi;knocking on the door of a Category 5 storm&comma;&&num;8221&semi; DeSantis said&comma; which designated historic storms with winds of 157 mph of more&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>DeSantis acknowledged the danger will likely last until at least late Thursday&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<blockquote><p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;This is a major&comma; said State Fire Marshal Jimmy Patronis&comma; who added  &&num;8220&semi;they’ve been training for their entire lives for this mission&period;&&num;8221&semi;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>DeSantis similarly said that the &OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;assets we have are unprecedented in the state’s history and&comma; unfortunately&comma; they’ll need to be deployed&comma;” the Post reports&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<p>The storm is set to hit land somewhere north of Fort Myers while coming about 125 miles south of Tampa&period; The region is noted for its retirees and tourists who come to the area for sandy beaches and barrier islands&comma; which forecasters said would likely be completely inundated with flood water&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<h3 style&equals;"text-align&colon; center&semi;">Those Who Have Stayed Behind Urged Not To Rush To Buy Supplies&comma; Work Outside On Reinforcing Homes<&sol;h3>&NewLine;<p>Those who have stayed behind were also told not to rush to buy supplies or work outside on reinforcing their homes&comma; according to the National Hurricane Center&period;<&sol;p>&NewLine;<blockquote><p>&OpenCurlyDoubleQuote;Time is quickly running out for residents to rush preparations to completion on the southwestern Florida peninsula as Hurricane &num;Ian nears&comma;” the National Hurricane Center tweeted just after 8&colon;30 a&period;m&period;<&sol;p><&sol;blockquote>&NewLine;<figure id&equals;"attachment&lowbar;99111" aria-describedby&equals;"caption-attachment-99111" style&equals;"width&colon;
