Former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie Says People Are ‘Going To Have To’ Accept More Deaths In Order To Reopen The Economy

Roommates, many people fear that reopening states will have a significant impact on the spread of the coronavirus. A number of conservatives in government, however,  seem to think it’s even more crucial to restart the U.S., economy, even if that means losing more lives to the virus.

In an interview on “The Daily DC” podcast, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie says that as social distancing restrictions ease up in several states, people “are going to have to” deal with the idea of losing thousands of more lives.

New government projections state that nearly 3,000 people will be dying daily by June 1, but this number does not phase Christie.

He is pushing for America to re-open. When I asked @GovChristie on #thedailydc whether people will be able to live with CDC projection of 3,000 deaths per day, he said “They’re gonna have to.” https://t.co/jc4h3PzbDu

“Of course, everybody wants to save every life they can — but the question is towards what end ultimately?” Chris Christie asked. “Are there ways. that we can thread the middle here to allow that there are going to be deaths, and there are going to be deaths no matter what?”

Following these comments, Christie suggests keeping the elderly at home, specifically those who have compromised immune systems, and limiting large public gatherings like concerts and sports events. He is, however, very adamant about allowing people of the work force to get back to work.

Chris Christie also says the coronavirus outbreak and the deaths that come along with it are similar to the United States sending troops to war during WWII.

“The message is that the American people have gone through significant death before,” he says. “We sacrificed those lives. We sent our young men during WWII over to Europe, out to he Pacific, knowing that man of them would not come back alive.”

He continues saying:

“And we decided to make that sacrifice because what we were standing up for was the American way of life, In the very same way now, we have to stand up for the American way of life.”
