Trump Found Not Guilty Of Impeachment Charges & Will Remain In Office

As many expected, Trump has been acquitted on all impeachment charges brought against him and will continue to remain in office. He received enough senate votes of “not guilty” to keep him in the White House until the outcome of the 2020 presidential election.

Earlier today, the Senate voted to acquit Donald Trump on two articles of impeachment revolving around his July 25th phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. During the impeachment, Democrats pointed out a public transcript of the conversation, during which Trump encouraged Zelensky to announce an investigation into former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

That phone call initiated the conversation on if Trump had engaged in a quid pro quo, since was is accused of withholding nearly $400 million in Ukrainian military aid to strong-arm Zelensky into opening the probe. As predicted, Trump denied doing anything wrong, but the House Democrats still charged him with “abuse of power” as well as “obstruction of Congress” for refusing to comply with subpoenas.

Republican Sen. Mitt Romney went against his GOP party and announced his decision to vote to convict Trump on the charge of abuse of power, however he did not vote to acquit him on the “obstruction of Congress” charge.

The vote tally during the impeachment was as follows: with a vote of 52-48, Trump was found not guilty on the first article of impeachment, abuse of power—shortly after, he was found not guilty on the second article of impeachment, obstruction of Congress, with a vote of 53-47.

The House needed a two-thirds majority for a conviction and removal from office. It was the third time in U.S. history that a president had been impeached.
