#Roommates, 2022 is just days away and as many get ready to ring in the new year—they may be doing it without a crucial part of the festivities…champagne. According to recent reports, a global champagne shortage is threatening to ruin the New Year’s Eve celebrations all across the world, which is another result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

@FOXBusiness reports, during a recent interview, Alison Napjus, Senior Editor of ‘Wine Spectator’ magazine, gave a very unfortunate update regarding champagne supply as New Year’s Eve inches closer. She stated that “it could be tough to find some of your favorite labels this year” because of severe disruptions within the champagne industry largely related to the pandemic, including a shortage of truck drivers, labels, bottles and more. Additionally, earlier this month it was revealed that the U.S. is currently facing a champagne shortage that is expected to last for the next several years.

Napjus added:

“It’s not even just that basic transportation issue. We’re also looking at things like shortages of the cage that goes on top of your bottle, labels, boxes to put wine in. So you put that all together with the huge increase in demand we’ve seen for champagne this year [and] for other sparkling wines and of course, the holiday season, and it could be tough to find some of your favorite labels this year.”

That reality also trickles down to increased pricing, as costs are rapidly rising and consumers are set to feel the extra money come out of their wallet very soon. Michael Bilello, Senior Vice President of Communications and Marketing of Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America, said “As the cost of business and challenges of doing business impact the wine and spirits industry, consumers are going to see that on the shelves or their bars and restaurants.”

You’ll recall that during the start of the COVID-19 pandemic demand for alcohol drastically increased, however that resulted in the spirits industry dealing with a severe drought and a decrease in wine production.
