According to the New York Post, officers of the Baltimore police union set up a GoFundMe page for the six charged officers and it was quickly taken down by the site. .
The police union tweeted, “Apparently our GoFundMe account has been suspended with no explanation.”
As far as the fundraiser page for the Baltimore officers, GoFundMe says that it violated the pages ban on fundraising in defense of “formal charges, or claims of heinous crimes, violent, hateful of discriminatory acts.” Furthermore, the page can’t be used to benefit anyone who is charged with serious violations of the law.
Although 100% of proceeds were not to benefit them, it was stated on the page that the money raised would be used to assist the officers with their legal fees –which is in direct violation of GoFundMe’s terms and agreements. Other portions of the $600K goal would go toward the officers’ living expenses.
Of the $600K goal, a little more than $1,000 had been raised before GoFundMe pulled the plug on the page.
This isn’t the first page the fundraising site has suspended. Last month, two Christian-owned businesses that refused to serve gay weddings were also done away with. Apparently, the pages “raised controversy, and forced the website to tighten its policy on prohibited crowd-funding.”
Police union officials say the officers did nothing wrong, whereas Baltimore’s chief prosecutor, Marilyn Mosby rushed the judgment. They are looking for a new site to take donations through.
