Mo’ money! Mo’ money! Mo’ money! When it comes to HBCUs, more money is definitely a conversation that’s taken place for decades. With the breakdown of President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, it appears that is exactly what HBCUs received.

On Tuesday, the White House provided a breakdown of the billion dollar contribution given to about 100 HBCUs within the last year, totaling over $2.7 billion.

According to the government website, “These funds were provided through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) over the past year.”

The funding, which is the largest in history, “is a key part of the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment to shared prosperity and equity for all Americans,” the press release also states.

The American Rescue Plan also requires half of the funds to provide “direct relief” to students. The Education Department expects more will ultimately be used for that purpose.

Here is a snapshot of how much HBCUs received by state and territory:

In addition, schools also received funds through the Coronavirus relief bill. According to the website, “these funds are already being used by colleges and universities across the country to serve students and ensure learning continues during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
