Looks like Oprah Winfrey’s past has really come back to haunt her … Ironically a few day before Halloween. Anyways earlier this week, it was reported that a man named Calvin Mitchell claimed that he was Oprah’s lost son!
Well Oprah has spoken up and she says that he is not her son but she does know who he is. “He was never my son,” she said to ET’s Nancy O’Dell on Thursday. “He was a child I befriended … I think it was 1992. I was doing a film for television called ‘There Are No Children Here.’”
She says that she met Calvin while on set in a Chicago project housing complex where she said a “a cute little sparkly-eyed boy” handed her a soda. “I was so charmed by him that I started talking to him about his family, his school life and found out that he was in a situation where his mother didn’t have a job and they were stuck in the projects.”
She describes moving Calvin who is now 35 and his family out of the projects and helping his mom gain employment. She also placed Calvin in a Chicago private school but he was kicked out two months later for chronic lateness because his family couldn’t afford clocks in the house.
She expressed her disappointment for Calvin’s inability to stay on the right track even after she went out and bought a bag full of clocks as well as placing him in another school.
“I had a long conversation with him about how disappointed I was but I was going to give him another chance,” she continued. “I found a school in Mississippi that was a private boarding school because I thought if I could remove him from the environment that he’d been accustomed to growing up in, that maybe that would be helpful to him.”
She did mention that she had a son when she was 14 but he unfortunately passed away. In an efforts to lighten up the convo she jokingly says, “I would have to say if I was the birth son, I’d be looking for me too. I’d be like ‘Mama, what happened?’”
