Roommates, we are sending our prayers to the loved ones of Herman Boone in the wake of the news of his passing. Many of you may be familiar with Mr. Boone and his work, thanks to the 2000 film, “Remember The Titans,” which starred Denzel Washington as Boone.
According to ESPN, Aly Khan Johnson, an assistant coach for Boone, said he passed away at his home in Alexandria, VA. Johnson revealed that Boone had been battling cancer, and he would visit the coach regularly. He said he had planned to see him on Wednesday when he learned of his passing.
Boone led the T.C. Williams High School football team to the state championship in 1971.
Dr. Gregory C. Hutchings Jr., the Alexandria City superintendent of schools said, “He touched many lives and hearts across the world. He was inspirational for so many people, including me as one of his former students. Alexandria City Public Schools was fortunate to have him as an icon at such a critical time in our history. He will be dearly missed.”
“Remember The Titians” displayed T.C. Williams’ journey to the state championship as they battled racial tensions as their team became integrated. They faced opponents, coaches, and referees that tried to bring them down by displaying spiteful behavior.
Aly Khan Johnson, who became an assistant coach for Boone back in 1972, said, “When I got there, you saw kids work together, hung out together. It was a brotherhood that you would see. As you know, athletics does something for a community, and it happened at the right time for that community.”
Johnson added that a funeral home that is operated by Boone’s wife, will be handling the arrangements, which are not complete at the moment.
As we previously reported, last week it was announced that James “Radio” Kennedy, who inspired the 2003 film “Radio,” starring Cuba Gooding Jr. passed away.
