Hurricane Nate continues to intensify as it heads to the US Gulf Coast. According to reports, the Category 1 storm is expected to hit New Orleans Saturday evening as a Category 2 storm.
The National Hurricane Center says Nate is packing 85 mph winds and is moving at 22 mph as of 8 a.m. ET. The latest advisory says it’s just 245 miles from the mouth of the Mississippi River.
Louisiana’s governor is urging residents to take it seriously, saying the quick-moving storm “has the potential to do a lot of damage.” Coastal Mississippi and Alabama are also expected to receive damaging winds and flooding.
According to CNN, mandatory evacuations have been ordered in areas outside levees in New Orleans and Plaquemines Parish. The government also declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Trump reportedly ordered federal assistance to help state and local response efforts ahead of the storm.
