The Artist Says She’s Getting “Raw” With Her First Solo Project

JT shared her commentary during a Q&;A with fellow “Muñekita” artist Kali Uchis for Interview Magazine.

During the chat, JT spent some time reflecting on how — although she gave up living in Miami for a bi-coastal lifestyle between LA and New York City — she still proudly boasts her South Florida outlook.

“I love Miami so much, even though I don’t live there because of the trauma. But I still talk like I’m from Miami. I still walk like I’m from Miami. I still rap like I’m from Miami.”

She also noted that her OG hometown fans keep her from veering into “more commercialized music,” and she’s looking to embrace this vibe by getting back to her “roots.”

“And when I do something good, the hood always calls me. When I stray and do more commercialized music, they don’t be feeling it, but when I do my little hood one-two, they be like, ‘That’s what I’m talking about.’ That’s what I’m going to lean into more when I do my first project. My roots.”

JT warmly added, “And just give it to them raw because raw b***hes is winning right now.”

On top of giving her fans what they want, she acknowledged, “I just want to push the limit. I want to make girls like me believe they could do it, for real.”

JT Says She Hopes To “Get More Into Community Work”

Speaking of her roots, the “Where The Bag At?” rapper reflected on how she aspires to achieve the same belief in herself that she once had, as she feels “the industry sucked that out.”

“I want to have that same belief in myself that I had years ago, and I feel like the industry sucked that out of all of us. We stopped believing in ourselves, how we was when we had nothing and our backs was against the wall.”

The artist continued, “Now we’re up against bigger machines, but I want to get back into that space, like tunnel vision.”

Additionally, JT said she’s been “having these little talks” with herself to provide self-assurance as she tries to reach new “levels” in her career.

“I’ve been having these little talks with myself. I know I could get on these levels because I have the talent, but I’m not really in my own space to the point that I’m nominated, and those are things I want to see for myself.”

Kali Uchis agreed and acknowledged the power of manifestation by noting, “Visualizing is definitely the first step, and it’s good that you have such a strong vision for what you want for yourself.”

As far as what the future holds for JT, she hinted that the next City Girls album will arrive later this month. Additionally, she hopes to release a “raw, grungy” EP in early 2024.

“I really want my first EP to have that raw, grungy sound. I wanted to do that for my birthday, but I think it’s too soon because I’m so picky. So probably the top of next year.”

She also said she wants to give back to the community more.

“I want to get more into community work. I really want to get back into the prison system to help out people and families. I want to be remembered for doing good in the world. I know it’s a clichéd answer, but it’s so serious coming from me.”
