Lecrae Addresses People Who Were Upset With His Response To A White Pastor Who Referred To Slavery As A ‘Blessing’

Lecrae is responding to a lot of disappointed fans today who were upset with his lack of a response after a prominent Atlanta megachurch pastor told him during a discussion that he’d like to redefine the term “white privilege” and change it to “white blessing” while also referring to slavery as a “blessing.”

The Christian rapper sat down with Pastor Louie Giglio, who leads Passion City Church in Atlanta, and Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy to have a religion-fueled conversation about race relations in America right now. While the entire conversation was not posted to social media, a journalist posted a snippet, which has since gone viral, according to News One.

“I appreciate y’all acknowledging the pain and the frustration you have with what was said,” Lecrae told fans. “It’s helped me process a lot as well. First of all I want you to know I wasn’t OK with it. Even as I sat there, I was very uncomfortable and I was processing on like, ‘man, what do I say in light of this?’”

In the clip, Giglio tells Lecrae and Cathy, “We understand the curse that was slavery. White people do. But we miss the blessing of slavery that it actually built up the framework for the world that white people live in and lived in.”

After Giglio was encouraged by Lecrae and Cathy, he continued.

“And so a lot of people call this white privilege and when you say those two words it just is like a fuse goes off for a lot of white people because they don’t want somebody telling them to check their privilege,” Giglio added before offering a solution.

“Hey, if the phrase is the trip-up, let’s get over the phrase and let’s get down to the heart. Let’s get down to what then do you want to call it,” GIglio said. “And I think maybe a great thing for me is to call it ‘white blessing’ — that I’m lying in the blessing of the curse that happened generationally that allowed me to grow up in Atlanta … where Black people did not have equal rights in this city (Atlanta).”

Understandably, people were stunned by Giglio’s comments.

While Lecrae didn’t fire back or necessarily correct him, he told fans he struggled with how to respond to Giglio.

“There’s been a lot of times where I’ve navigated white supremacy or racial injustice where I just been trying to figure out where I wanted to lash out honestly in anger,” Lecrae said. “And there’s other moments where I’ve been like ‘alright God, give me the grace and the wisdom on how to deal with this and in that moment I was processing like what do I do.”

Lecrae further revealed that he had a conversation with Giglio after that discussion and let him know his views and perspective.

Lecrae ended his video by thanking fans for their words and their encouragement and made it clear he did not co-sign what Giglio said about white privilege.Want updates directly in your text inbox? Hit us up at 917-722-8057 or click here to join!
