Although we are in a pandemic, Macys annual Thanksgiving Day Parade still took place. Instead of being live this year, the annual event was pre-recorded, and it aired on Thanksgiving Day for families to enjoy at home.
However, Macys caught a little heat on Twitter for one of their tweets that was made in reference to one of the performances that took place during the parade.
The Zeta Phi Beta Sorority performed during this years parade, and while giving them a shoutout on Twitter, Macys referred to the international Historically Black sorority as a “diverse dance group.” In a now-deleted tweet, Macy’s said, What’s that sound, you ask? Why it’s the diverse dance group, Zeta Phi Beta Steppers! Performing a special routine, they put together to help us celebrate this unprecedented year.”
Macys later corrected themselves and said in another tweet, “Look who just STEPPED things up. We loved having @ZPHIBHQ an international, historically Black Sorority with us at the #MacysParade for their centennial.”
The Divine Nine includes nine historically black sororities and fraternities, which Zeta Phi Beta is a part of.
Zeta Phi Beta’s “Centennial Steppers” joined the parade as the organization celebrated 100 years of “Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood, and Finer Womanhood.”
Zeta Phi Beta celebrated the performance and said, “Congratulations again to our Centennial Steppers who performed in the Macys Day Thanksgiving Parade this year! You all were #Finer and represented Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated well!”
