Mara Brock Akil is responsible for some of our favorite television show such as, “Girlfriends,” “The Game,” and “Being Mary Jane.”
Recently the screenwriter and producer landed a new series over on OWN along with her husband Salim Akil.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, they husband and wife duo have teamed up with OWN to develop their new show “Love Is___.” The hour long drama will be inspired by their real life relationship, as they aim to tell the story of a modern day power couple.
Oprah Winfrey talked about the Akils joining her network, she said, “I’ve dreamed of working with the Akils.I’ve been a huge fan of their work since first viewing Girlfriends. They know just how to hit the cultural nerve to make you think and laugh at the same time.”
The series was originally developed as an half-hour comedy for ABC but unfortunately did not make it to the pilot stage.
The Akils will not only create the show, but they will executive produce through their Akil Production Company, with Mara serving as the showrunner.
No official release date has been announced, but the show is expected to air on OWN in 2018.
