Mardi Gras Parades 2021 Cancelled Due To COVID-19

Chile, if you think you gon’ be on Bourbon or Canal Street in 2021 with your beads and Hand Grenades, celebrating Mardi Gras next year, think again.

According to NPR, New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has cancelled the parade aspect of the celebration due to COVID-19.

“The City of New Orleans cannot cancel Mardi Gras because it is a religious Holiday, however we will not be able to celebrate the Holiday this year as we have in the past,” the website reads. The city’s website also stated, “Parades of any kind will not be permitted this year because large gatherings have proven to be super spreader events of the COVID-19 virus.”

As for Mardi Gras Krewes festivities, some will still have balls but they’ll be modified.

“Some Mardi Gras Krewes may be holding modified Balls following strict local COVID-19 guidelines.  Attendance at a Ball is by invitation only, therefore not open to the general public.”

Just how much can you party on Bourbon? It’ll be very limited.

“Bourbon Street and Frenchman Street entertainment Districts are open, but subject to Local and State COVID Guidelines at all times. Capacity and hours can be subject to change. It is highly recommended that time in the city’s entertainment districts be limited and social distancing observed with mask wearing.”

Communications Director Beau Tidwell also stated, “I don’t think this should be a surprise to anyone that this is a consideration,” said Tidwell. “Parades, as we have traditionally celebrated them here, are not possible under the current guidelines, and that’s why we’re asking for people to help us work on some creative alternatives.”

Because there’s a cap of 250 people, there’s no way a parade can be held while adhering to these restrictions.

Welp! Looks like the first quarter of 2021 may resemble 2020.
