McDonald’s Announces Plant-Based Burger In Canada With Future Plans For U.S. Expansion

Well ya’ll the battle of the fast food chains serving planted-based burgers just got major competition, as the world’s largest fast food chain, McDonald’s has finally announced plans to offer a plant-based burger, but not in the States…yet.

It seems that the fast food world is finally realizing the financial opportunities in offering plant-based items to customers. Burger King saw huge success a few months ago with its Impossible Whopper, KFC is currently prepping vegan chicken, Taco Bell already serves vegan/vegetarian options and now the biggest of them all, McDonald’s has formally revealed its plans to serve a plant-based burger in Canada.

It’s called the PLT (plant, lettuce, tomato) and according to @time, the burger will be sold for 12 weeks in 28 restaurants in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. The PLT will be made with Beyond Meat, which is a direct rival of Impossible, the plant-based substitute used for Burger King’s Impossible Whopper.

While there is currently no announced date as to when the PLT with appear in stateside McDonald’s restaurants, if it proves to be a success in Canada, Americans will certainly get their opportunity to try it out.

When asked why McDonald’s was taking such a small start with its plant-based burger, Ann Wahlgren, Vice President of Global Menu Strategy, said this:

“Why just a small test? We’re in learning mode, so testing is a major part of how we develop our menu. It’s how we look- before we leap.”

Customer demand is showing that the want for more plant-based options at fast food restaurants has been long overdue, as many of those options have been huge sellers for big names in the market. Although we currently don’t know when we’ll taste the PLT, customers are certain to line up when they get the chance.

Roommates, are you here for the PLT?
